ABSTRACT
The article discusses the political and economic risk faced by Taiwan. Chiang Pin-kung, the vice-chairman of Taiwan's opposition Nationalist party, has completed an historic five-day visit to China, aimed at easing cross-strait tensions. During the visit, Chiang met with Chen Yunlin, minister of China's policy-making Taiwan Affairs Office, where he discussed the possibility of opening direct non-stop air and shipping links between Taiwan and the mainland. Taiwan's index of leading economic indicators fell by 1.3% in February, marking its fifth straight month of decline. The fall was mainly due to lower demand for exports, expected to hit economic growth this year.
