ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the political and economic risks in Vietnam. Vietnam has hit back at a report from the U.S. State Department criticising human rights in the country. The report, published at the end of February 2005, cited concerns over lack of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and freedom of association. Vietnam attracted a record 2.9 million tourists in 2004, a 21 percent increase from the previous year. The sector is now making an increasingly important contribution to the economy, accounting for 3.7 percent of GDP in 2004.
