This article focuses on the political and economic risks in Thailand. Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is looking at new ways to solve the violence in the three southern provinces, which has left over 600 people dead. Shinawatra, who is normally intolerant of any criticism, surprised his opponents by inviting academics and villagers to come up with plans to end the violence peacefully. Thailand's short-term political risk rating remains on 67.0. Thailand's central bank raised interest rates by a quarter of a percent on March 2, 2005 as concerns about higher inflation, fuelled by rising oil prices, increased.
