This article focuses on the issue of bird flu alert by World Health Organization (WHO) in Vietnam. The WHO has warned that a global influenza pandemic, based around the deadly bird flu virus "may be imminent" and called for the development of a vaccine for the disease. So far, 38 people have died from bird flu in Vietnam and Thailand since the H5N1 virus was first discovered in poultry last year. Vietnam now exports over US$5bn a year to the US, making it Vietnam's largest trading partner. She did however warn that Vietnam would need to improve its protection on intellectual property if it was to attract more high-tech investment to Vietnam.
