Country Report
This article focuses on the risk factors in different sectors of Slovakia. In a sharp turnaround from the last elections in 2002, the incumbent governmentand investorshave more to fear from the populist opposition Smer party than from former authoritarian premier Vladimir Meciar's HZDS. Slovakia's short-term political rating was stable at 76 in January. The short-term economy rating remained at 62, as BMI tweaked its forecasts. In an indication that the government aims at some further liberalizing measures in the run-up to the elections, the government has announced that it will privatize its remaining 49% stake in fixed-line operator Slovak Telecom in 2006.
