The article provides recent developments in the political, economic and business environment in Thailand. An increase in government spending across rural areas in Thailand has fueled speculation that Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whose electoral mandate runs out in January, may be about to call an early election. An increase in U.S. interest rates at the end of June is fueling speculation that the Bank of Thailand may be about to raise Thai interest rates from their present low level of 1.25%. Prime Minister Thaksin in a recent meeting with Thai business leaders described Thailand as being in the midst of an important transition. To ensure future prosperity, Thaksin said he would continue to push for more free-trade agreements, in particular with China and the U.S., and maintain fiscal discipline.
