ABSTRACT
This article presents a risk summary for Thailand, as of August 1, 2003. Thailand has raised security measures in response to intelligence suggesting possible attacks on US, British, Australian and Israeli nationals. It is also faced with possible unrest from sympathizers of Myanmar's detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Such reports bode ill for Thailand's lucrative tourism industry, although a bigger worry is perhaps the lingering slump in Asia-wide tourist arrivals from the SARS crisis. Thailand's economic performance is impressive. Manufacturing output is on track for another solid quarter of growth, with an expansion of 14.5 percent year-over-year during the April-May months.
