ABSTRACT
The article discusses the case of a neonate who presened with subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) and hypercalcemia following hypothermia therapy for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). A medical background and history is provided highlighting the premature rupture of membranes and subsequent mechanical ventilation and phenobarbital treatment. Several theories on the pathogenesis of SCFN are presented including its association with hypercalcemia. Nephrocalcinosis and nephrolithiasis are mentioned as possible results of chronic hypercalcemia.
