ABSTRACT
The article recounts the founding national convention of political organization La Raza Unida on September 1, 1972 held in El Paso, Texas. In the late sixties, the Mexican-American began to establish himself as a potent political force in Texas. La Raza Unida had elected officials to local offices in twenty-two counties by 1970. They wanted bilingual education in all schools, free legal service to all Mexican-Americans and restoration of Spanish and Mexican land-grant rights.
