ABSTRACT
The article recounts events that occurred in Texas on February 1, 1859. The famous old Menger Hotel in San Antonio opened for business. Travelers could buy beer, enjoy fresh turtle from the San Antonio River, feast on wild game and mix with famous travelers such as Robert E. Lee, U. S. Grant and Philip Sheridan. Other notable people who enjoyed the Menger were Theodore Roosevelt, O. Henry and Sidney Lanier. Baylor University in Waco, Texas was also founded on the same date.
