ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the book "The Fetal Matrix: Evolution, Development and Disease," by P. Gluckman and M. Hanson. The book is about the biological interpretation of disease and health. The authors contend that during embryonic, fetal or perhaps the early postnatal periods, mammals make irreversible choices in their developmental trajectories, in effect predicting the environment into which they will be born and grow up. The authors proposes that fetal and maternal health are of paramount importance in influencing later experience of disease and health.
