It is not unusual for people to take part in group activities in many aspects of their lives, but truly exceptional group experiences are rare. In Extraordinary Groups, Geoffrey M. Bellman and Kathleen Ryan describe the factors behind such exceptional teams and demonstrate how their Group Needs Model can be used to transform a group from ordinary to extraordinary. According to the authors, extraordinary groups have several characteristics in common: a compelling purpose that inspires members to make the group�s work a top priority; shared leadership that encourages mutual responsibility; just-enough structure to create confidence without being a burden; full engagement that results in enthusiastic members; embracing differences that turns diversity into a strength; unexpected learning that results in personal growth; strengthened relationships among group members; and of course, great results. Based on the authors� field study, extraordinary results are much more likely to emerge when the group is small, as small groups are most effective at meeting individuals� needs accomplishing goals. Groups that can harnesses the energy to satisfy their goals and surpass expectations have a profound affect on their members; they experience increased confidence, higher motivation, restored faith in organizations, and deeper connections with others. Individuals also acquire new skills and knowledge that lead to a sense of personal empowerment, and their individual effort is both rewarded and multiplied. Organizations also benefit, as the goals set for these groups are achieved and frequently surpassed.
