ABSTRACT
The volume seeks to impart to the reader an understanding of basic rhetorical principles and devices which increase reading comprehension, improve written communication, and extend the active reading and writing vocabulary. It is designed to be used with a handbook on rhetoric. The authors maintain that a knowledge of rhetoric structure and relationships enables students to grasp the main idea of a reading, its subpoints, and the supporting evidence. Wise choices based on sound criteria instead of guesses, foster clear, effective written communication. Part 1: Options in purpose--to explain, to persuade, to evaluate, or to amuse. Part 2: Options in viewpoint--objective or subjective. Part 3: Options for development--detail, narrative, definition, analysis, etc. Part 4: Combination of options in rhetoric.
