ABSTRACT
Presents a review article focusing on the conversion of the senators of Rome to Christianity based on the book "The Making of a Christian Aristocracy: Social and Religious Change in the Western Roman Empire," by Michele Renee Salzman. Imperial support for Christianity in the fourth century AD; Conversion of Christianity into the official religion of the Roman world; Chaotic process in which the Roman governing classes abandoned their patronage of the old forms of religion in favor of the new; Use of coercion to force Roman officials to adopt the new religion; Observation that over the course of the centuries Christianity had been absorbing the ideologies of the pagan, secular world.
