ABSTRACT
Information on distal splenorenal shunt from a chapter of the book "Atlas of Gastrointestinal Surgery," Volume One, Second Edition, is presented. Distal splenorenal shunt is a selective shunt designed to allow mesenteric blood to continuously flow antegrade into the liver, while gastroesophageal varices are decompressed retrograde. The procedures for distal splenorenal shunt in patients with portal hypertension are described.
