ABSTRACT
A section from the book "Atlas of Gastrointestinal Surgery" Volume One, Second Edition is presented. It describes and illustrates how common duct exploration is performed. This procedure is usually performed by general surgeons. Endoscopic techniques are employed to manage patients with common duct stones. The anatomy can be delineated by endoscopic retrograde cholangiography and following papillotomy, stones are endoscopically extracted from the duct using balloons or baskets. Details of how the technique is performed are discussed.
