ABSTRACT
A section from the book "Atlas of Gastrointestinal Surgery" Volume One, Second Edition, is presented. It describes and illustrates the adoption of the choledochotomy approach in laparoscopic common bile duct (CBD) exploration. This approach is indicated when the stone is more than 1 centimeter in size or when the surgeon fails to retrieve smaller stones via the transcystic approach. An additional port is placed for easier manipulation, retraction and suturing. A biliary Fogarty catheter or vascular Fogarty catheter is used to remove the stone.
