ABSTRACT
A section of the book "Flood!: The 1993 Midwest Downpours" which talks about the nature of floods, is presented. About 140 people are killed by floods. About $4 billion worth of damages are caused by floods. Flash floods happen when a dam explodes or heavy rain falls in a short time. Floods can occur in minutes. More people are killed by flash floods. The flash flood in 1993 was caused by the flooding of many rivers at the same time. Levees are damaged and the water flowed out of the rivers and over the land.
