ABSTRACT
An essay from the book "Cultural Identities in Canadian Literature" is presented. It examines dialectical tensions between imperial centers and colonized subjects in the Manawaka novels by Canadian author Margaret Laurence. It also examines some occurrences of dominance, difference and hybridity as reflected in the ethnic or cultural affiliation of characters in "A Stone Angel," "A Jest of God," and "The Diviners." "The Stone Angel" represents Laurence's first imaginative representation of the fictional world of Manawaka.
