ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 of the book "Contemporary Mexican-American Women Novelists: Toward a Feminist Identity" is presented. This chapter focuses on the female identity as developed by Mexican-American writers. It argues that some of the women novelists are moving toward a feminist Chicana understanding of women's experience. Elaine Showalter's developmental stages in literature by women are discussed. The theoretical directions taken by feminist criticism are also described.
