ABSTRACT
An essay from the book "Essays on Twentieth-Century German Drama and Theater: An American Reception 1977-1999" is presented. It examines the transition of German drama from realism to expressionism in the twentieth-century. Dramatic devices such as empirical verification and cause and effect were chosen by theater playwrights as a new framework. Expressionism in Germany refers to the attempt to express the essence rather than the appearance of reality via the use of non-realistic symbols and the juxtaposition of ordinarily non-related symbols. Expressionism proposed that the path to truth lies in the soul of man, which captured the attention of realistic theater in Germany.
