Mary H. Gibbon: Teamwork of the Heart

The article presents a biography of Mary "Maly" Hopkinson Gibbon, whose collaboration with husband Dr. John Gibbon, Jr. produced the successful "Model II" heart-lung machine. She was born on September 25, 1903 in Manchester, Massachusetts and studied at Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia and found herself beguiled by discussions of Dr. Frank Fremont-Smith's medical practice while in Paris, France. She received her Master's degree in social work in 1954 and died of esophageal cancer in 1986.
