ABSTRACT
A biography of French poet Paul Éluard is presented. Éluard was born Eugène Grindel on December 14, 1895 in France. When he was in his late teens, he entered the army and served in the trenches but he was discharged with gangrene of the bronchi. During his recuperation he read a great deal of poetry. His early works include "Le Devoir et l'InquiÉtude," published in 1917. In 1926, with the publication of "Capitale de la Douleur," his reputation was established.
