ABSTRACT
Background information on pirate Major Stede Bonnet is presented. The author suggests that Bonnet was perhaps one of the most bizarre pirates of the Golden Age of Piracy (c. 1700-1730). According to the author, Major Stede Bonnet took up piracy after leading a long and distinguished life as a soldier, businessman, husband and father. Though he was an inexperienced and foolhardy sea captain, the "Gentleman's Pirate" captured and destroyed many ships along America's Atlantic coast before Bonnet was apprehended.
