ABSTRACT
The article presents a biography of former U.S. President William McKinley. Born in Niles, Ohio, McKinley was famous for his serious demeanor and dignity even as a child. After serving in the Ohio Volunteer Regiment--under future President Rutherford B. Hayes--he went to law school and soon passed the bar. In 1871, McKinley, a supporter of Hayes' run for Ohio governor, was elected to Congress. After years in Congress, two terms as governor of Ohio and permanent chairman of the Republican Party, he won the Republican nomination for president in 1896. He won the presidency, becoming the first president to win a popular majority since 1872.
