This article focuses on various aspects of offshore outsourcing in the U.S. electronics assembly and surface mounting industries. Not all products are a good fit for offshore manufacturing. Some issues to consider include: percentage of labor content versus product cost, weight of product, schedule flexibility requirements, maturity of product, total mix of product, security considerations, patent protection and others.
