ABSTRACT
A communal internet presence is an established source to inform citizens or guests about respective offers, goods and services. The public library is anticipated to be among those services as well. But how: straightforward or under which terms? This analysis is interested in the terminological placing of the term public library on communal homepages. For that purpose, 1,557 communal homepages were visited. Only a few libraries are directly linked under the term 'library'. However, in the majority of cases the internet user has to find the respective library under superordinate terms or conceptual pairs. The terminological association is not trivial because it assigns functional dominance to the library, such as culture, education, leisure, tourism, administration and so on. Therefore, the terminology contributes to the communication of the library's philosophy in public and thus is perceived by it.
