ABSTRACT
After opening their financial advisory firm less than a year ago, the principals of Backstrom, McCarley, Berry& Co. expanded their business as a broker-dealer. Now, in addition to serving as public financial advisers, McCarley, Don Backstrom, and Leonard Berry's firm has been licensed since March 2003 as a government securities broker, and municipal securities and nonprofit securities broker-dealer. Clients encouraged them to work beyond the financial advisory role, according to the principals. The men each spent an average of 20 years in the municipal finance industry and started the San Francisco-based company in June of 2002, after previously working for another African-American firm, the Chapman Co. in Baltimore, Maryland.
