Experts Warn Market Participants of Rising Interest Rates

Although the U.S. economy is recovering, there is danger ahead for some municipal bond market participants from interest rates that are slated to rise about a year from now, a pension firm executive told attendees yesterday during a panel discussion at the Government Finance Officers Association's 97th annual conference. There is very little risk of deflation in the domestic economy, but given recent reports of weak retail sales, the Federal Reserve Board will be prepared to lower its trend-setting interest rate in 2003 if central bankers believe the move is necessary to stimulate that economy.
