ABSTRACT
THOSE pictures of early British slums (Mail) brought back some happy memories and, at 88, these are precious. I was one of seven born before World War II to Lithuanian parents in the Gorbals when it was the most notorious district in Glasgow. The street we lived in had such a bad reputation that Glasgow corporation changed its name. Our father was tough, hard even, but he fought for what was best for all of us and I still cherish his memory. He was reading English books and newspapers before I did. His background led him to talk a lot about communism but he lived by strong conservative principles that I later adopted. He asked nothing of the state, and got nothing. He sent us to Protestant schools although my mother was Roman Catholic. Education came before religion, he said. And to make it easier for us to fit into our new world, he changed our family name.
