ABSTRACT
THERE is a great deal of unrest in club rugby circles regarding new regulations on the payment of players. In a bid to level the playing field, the IRFU have outlawed financial incentives, with the threat of heavy sanctions for clubs breaking ranks. It may be a noble concept, harking back to the Corinthian ideals of the amateur era, but, practically speaking, it is a farce. Particularly as the punishment system requires whistle blowers paying a €500 fee to expose the miscreants with the obligation to provide conclusive proof. It's not going to happen. Successhungry clubs will merely operate below the table in a fashion that will steer well clear of the treasurer's books and be impossible to trace.

UPTON PARK has always been a difficult place to play under lights for away teams. West Ham fans were never my biggest cheerleaders anyway, but for some reason going there for a late kick-off was always a completely different proposition to an afternoon game.
