ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the profits reported by the Great Britain-based retailing company Tesco PLC. The latest record profits should not influence the decision as to who should take over Safeway. Pre-tax profit at the leading supermarket was up 13% at£1.36 bn for the year ending February 22, 2003. The figures underline the increasing polarization of the supermarket sector following disappointing trading news from J Sainsbury PLC that sales at Safeway may have slipped. Tesco's bid for Safeway is one of four referred to the Competition Commission, along with Wm Morrison PLC, Asda Walmart and Sainsbury.
