ABSTRACT
Farm businesses are the cornerstones of local rural economies, Farmers' Union of Wales has said. The union made the claim as it unveiled its Road to Recovery for Rural Wales Manifesto that it is encouraging politicians to adopt at the local elections on May 1, 2003. The manifesto highlights the level of money that family farmers put into the rural economy. The union's manifesto calls for family farmers to be cushioned from the effects of CAP reform, reduced bureaucracy and red tape, more cash for agri-environment schemes, and a properly funded early retirement scheme. Stopping the spread of bovine TB and the need for great care when phasing out OTMS are among many animal health issues highlighted in the manifesto.
