this article focuses on the 2003 Farm Planner of the Year competition to be held at Green Park Farm near Mortimer in Berks, England with the six teams of students having to produce a development plan for a forward-looking arable and beef farm. Farm is owned by John and Claudia Miller and their two sons Peter and Ruth Miller. While John Miller is involved in the strategic side of the business, day-to-day decisions are increasingly taken by the sons. The handover of power is proving relatively harmonious, too, since all the family are more or less in agreement over the need to ensure that the farm is profitable, diversified and in tune with nature for the future. The six teams have won from an initial 14, all of whom had to compile a preliminary development plan for Great Park Farm. Across the whole farm the main enterprises are cereals, beans, beef and sheep, though it's the cereals and beef that are the money-earners.
