Cattle belching out methane are a major source of greenhouse gas, but a simple increase in animal productivity could cut emissions by 40%. The Irish government aimed to cut methane production from agriculture by 10%, University College Dublin researcher Daniel Lovett told BSAS delegates, as of April 4, 2003. Simply increasing liveweight gain in beef cattle and reducing the time taken to reach slaughter weight from 30 to 25 months lowers an animal's lifetime emissions by 17%. Even with starch, using maize meal instead of wheat or barley further cuts methane production.
