ABSTRACT
At the University of Nottingham in Nottingham, England the increase in student numbers has put enormous pressure on the institution's IT systems, which were designed in the 1980s for a much smaller user group. With 25,000 full and part-time students, plus 1,500 academic and administrative staff to support, the IT departments beginning the slow process of modernising its infrastructure. One of the first projects is to completely rewrite the student records database, which holds details on all present and past attendees at Nottingham. Each record includes a student's personal details, the modules and degree they have studied, and the results of any examinations or other course work. In fact, the record forms the basis of the academic transcript that students receive when they graduate, explains Ian Coulton, group leader of the business IS team at the University of Nottingham.
