ABSTRACT
Under the action of very intense free electron laser (FEL) radiation, a homogeneous plasma can manifest nonlinear behavior and dramatically change the spatial distribution of the incident electromagnetic beam. The dominant mechanism is the constriction depletion of the plasma due to an averaged ponderomotive force. The unstable character of the FEL-beam plasma system and the consequent self-focusing are studied in the dynamical ‘‘supersonic limit.’’ The self-similar structure of the high-frequency field and density distributions is computed and the form of a ‘‘trace,’’ left by a moving ‘‘focus’’ in the plasma is determined.

A periodic structure is induced at the surface of a metal target exposed to a series of p-polarized 200-femtosecond laser pulses with intensity close to the melting threshold of the target material. An approach to compressing high-power laser beams in plasmas via coherent Raman sideband generation is described. The technique requires two beams: a pump and a probe detuned by a near-resonant frequency Ω < ωp. The two laser beams drive a high-amplitude electron plasma wave (EPW) which...

The generation of relativistic electromagnetic solitons in plasma with spatiotemporal density modulation is investigated. It is well known that air plasma induced by ultrashort laser pulses emits broadband terahertz waves.
