John Baldacci, Mayor of Maine is opposed to the plans of Las Vegas developer Marnell Corrao Associates and the state's Native American tribes to build a casino and resort on the Southern tip of the state. To counter their efforts, Baldacci is balancing his $175 million economic development bond package and Pinetree Development Zone proposal, which would give tax breaks to businesses in economically depressed areas of the state, against the casino development. According to Baldacci, his administration's initiatives are enough to strengthen the economy without bringing in casinos.
