ABSTRACT
Unlike operations in Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa, the Predator UAV pilots flying over Iraq are being allowed to pull the trigger for the U.S. Air Force instead of the CIA. The Pentagon has shown video of a Predator attack on a satellite dish serving the ministry of information in downtown Baghdad. Initially, however, those kinds of offensive operations into the heart of Iraq's remaining air defenses took a backseat to the mission of patrolling western Iraq. The unmanned aircraft have also carried and fired Stingerair-to-air missiles including an unsuccessful attempt to detera MiG-25 that shot down a Predator before the U.S. startedoffensive ground action in Iraq. The pre-war period helped the Predator unit prepare for the new conflict.
