ABSTRACT
Objective: To investigate the criteria used by health professionals in the classification of types of breastfeeding. Method: A quantitative study, observational-sectional conducted in primary health care in Belo Horizonte. We applied a form of 80 mothers of infants to investigate the criteria used by 57 health professionals in the classification of types of breastfeeding. Results: The highest coefficients of variation were found for the criteria for classification of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and mixed feeding (BF) - 41.2% and 20.5%, respectively. The criteria for predominant breastfeeding (PBF) was unknown by most professionals. The prevalence of EBF was 25%, PBF - 10%, BF - 38%, ABF (artificial breastfeeding) - 27% and 73% of children under 1 year were breastfed. Conclusion: The results indicated that prevalence rates, although still outside the recommended ideal, demonstrated that the situation is more promising than hitherto was being recorded.
