ABSTRACT
The Altamaha River in Georgia flows like soft breath across silk sheets, winding patiently for 137 miles through remnants of bottomland hardwoods, cypress swamps, tidal marshes and ancient memories. To Charlie Ford and other Southeast Georgians who make their livings in nature-based tourism, it is liquid gold. Ford ought six boats and opened Three Rivers Expeditions in his native Jeff Davis County in Georgia. Several years ago the 11counties along the river, including Jeff Davis and Appling, formed the Altamaha River Partnership. The group has been active in promoting sustainable eco-tourism and acquiring state funds to build and improve parks and landings along the river, including the Towns Bluff Landing park project in Jeff Davis and Falling Rocks Park in Appling.
