Three published approximation formulae for selecting the best multiattribute alternative based on rank-ordered weights are evaluated. All formulae are surprisingly efficacious in determining the best alternative. Rank order centroid (ROC) weights are more accurate than the other rank-based formulae; furthermore, the ROC formula generalizes to incorporate both other forms of partial information about attribute weights and partial rank order information as well. Because a ROC-based analysis is so straightforward and efficacious, it provides an appropriate implementation tool.

We propose a methodology to support decisions on how to construct rankings of objects which account for decision makers' preferences. As it is not always so that objects to be ranked are known upfront, the methodology is focused on constructing ranking algorithms rather than rankings themselves....

New organizational concepts like manufacturing networks or production networks, or even everyday enterprise's task like supplier selection, require comparison and ranking of some enterprises. A proper comparison method and procedure needs to be established. In this research a procedure for...

The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is flawed as a procedure for ranking alternatives in that the rankings produced by this procedure are arbitrary. This paper provides a brief review of several areas of operational difficulty with the AHP, and then focuses on the arbitrary rankings that occur...

The outsourcing is an important trend, studied by several authors nowadays. This article provides a decision model, exploring multicriteria methods in order to support outsourcing choices. An outsourcing decision problem is modeled and then solved with the use of PROMETHEE (preference ranking...

Multicriteria decision aid (MCDA) methods have been around for quite some time. However, the elicitation of preference information in MCDA processes and the lack of supporting practical means are problematic in real-life applications. Various proposals have been made for how to eliminate some of...

We investigate the connection between weights, scales, and the importance of criteria, when a linear value function is assumed to be a suitable representation of a decision maker’s preferences. Our considerations are based on a simple two-criteria experiment, where the participants were...
