ABSTRACT
This paper presents the process and results of a qualitative research approach that seeks to understand the reasons why some schools fail with the student learning as it would be expected by their context. Based on a theoretical framework focused on School Effectiveness Research, this is a study about a prototypical schools approach has been performed in eight primary schools from eight other Iberoamerican countries. These schools were selected from a larger study, quantitative and in which was measured not only in curricular performance areas such as Mathematics and Reading, but also in different socio-affective variables as self-concept or wellbeing at school in the sense on Added Value. The instruments applied were focus groups of teachers, students and parents, semi structured interviews of teachers and principals and classroom observation in other to have a holistic picture of these schools. Among the factors founded are a negative climate, lack of commitment, motivation and teamwork of teachers, absent or authoritarian direction, little families involvement, low expectations, teaching reproductive processes and inadequate facilities and neglected.
