ABSTRACT
The lack of awareness in usage of wild plants has led to severe degradation of the forest and related bio-diversity. Due to forest degradation, several medicinal plants are threatened and consequently the livelihoods of the locals. This paper aims to study the environmental awareness in the local community about the wise practices of wild plants in the Sudhangali area of Kashmir Pakistan. Questionnaire survey was conducted to find out the level of awareness of local community about indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants in the area. Group discussions were carried out with the community members of all ages to know their knowledge, attitude and practices about wild plant resources of the area. These wild plant species are going to decline in number and ultimately will become extinct if their importance is not realized to local community through environmental education and similarly indigenous knowledge is also not transferring to next generation, and this will become erode with the time. The purpose of this study is to implement an education /awareness program with community and school children to enhance their level of awareness regarding importance of wild plant species of Sudhangali.
