ABSTRACT
The European Union Cohesion Policy aims to reduce the existing gaps and to eliminate economic and social disparities between the regions of the European Union by allocating Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund to the Member States. As a member state of the European Union, Romania actively participates in EU cohesion policy, with a financial allocation for the 2007-2013 programming phase of more than EUR 19 billion for the convergence objective. For accessing the European funds, Romania has created the institutional and legislative framework for the management, coordination and implementation of the Structural Instruments, by establishing institutional structures similar to the specific European structures and by harmonizing the Romanian legislation with the Community legislation.
