ABSTRACT
The article reflects on the political leadership of U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich as of 1996. It comments on the efforts by the Democrats to discredit him based on his involvement in the development of the Contract With America. It analyzes the charges against him which were simple political opportunism. It argues in favor of the proposal for him to back off and wait for the ideal opportunity to regain his political clout.
