ABSTRACT
In each issue of Marketing Management, we reprint an article appropriate to our cover story from a past issue of our sister publication, Journal of Marketing. In this issue, we offer an edited version of an article that appeared in the April, 1953, written by W. Edwards Denting, father of the quality movement in Japan and the U.S . Deming's blueprint for ensuring quality in manufacturing—known as his Fourteen Points—ties together process-oriented management concepts with customer satisfaction. His article is a summary of an address delivered in Tokyo the 14th of January, 1953, at a meeting of industrial executives sponsored by the Nihon Kezai and the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers. The eloquence of the concepts makes you wonder why we were not listening.
