Knives off the streets

May 2014
Evening Standard;5/ 8/2014, p14
THE dreadful, fatal stabbings of two young men in London in the past week has inevitably raised the stakes in the new row over tackling knife crime. The Coalition is divided on the matter. Two Tory MPs are proposing a mandatory jail sentence for those caught a second time with a knife; the Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, is opposing the plan on the grounds that jailing more young people will create more hardened criminals: he thinks these sentences should be at judges' discretion. Now the Mayor of London has weighed in, criticising Mr Clegg for his opposition to automatic sentences.
