ABSTRACT
In this study, mural paintings of a mosque was investigated which is in Giresun City, Yağlıdere district, Tekke village. Properties of the pencil-work paintings are examined and evaluated in terms of the technic and composition. Sanctuary walls of the Tekke Village Mosque is ornamented by pencil-work on the casting which is typical of Westernization Period. Colors used in pencil-work are; mustard, black, blue, tile red, orange, grass-green, brown and its tones. It was seen that superficial and schematic depiction of the pictures in this mosque are dealt with in two-dimension and miniature traditions. Among the madder mural paintings, stylized flowers rising out of the vase, leafy green trees, lemon, strawberry or plum trees are plantal compositions which are dealt with a naturalist approach. Besides, mosque depiction, loose curtains, different forms of vases, candle, candleholder, wall clocks are among the other ornaments in the mosque. Although Istanbul effects can be observed on the paintings, the application can be said missing. Although mural paintings in Tekke Village Mosque are not as mature and masterfully as the ones in Istanbul, it is important in terms of presenting an original approach in the folk art. It was observed that art is introduced to the folk in a small settlement and the ornament program applied in the sanctuary belogns to Islamic philosophy. The style of these paintings indicates XIX century and it is important that most of the pencil-work of the mosque is yet original today.
