The article discusses steps that surgeons should follow after excision of a periocular basal cell carcinoma(BCC) when a narrow histologic safety margin (HSM) of under 0.5 millimeters was reported by histopathology. It comments on a study that demonstrated the most prognostic indicators of BCC recurrence was resection margin distance and growth pattern. It reflects on the need for prospective studies that contain adequate follow-up to determine the association of decreased HSM and recurrence.
